The Ballad of Captain Thanksween
It’s that time of year again as we cross the autumn rubicon to the vast stretch of the winter days and holidays. God help us as the old man used to say.
How not to wear a mask.
Greetings from Pandemic month…..i want to say…….32?
Masks seem to even now continue to be a point of confusion for many folks, from “Do I need one” to “Why doesn’t this sock over my face count?”.
True story: a few months ago, I was in the supermarket and as I turned the end of an aisle, saw far down near the corner of the store a guy pushing a cart wearing a clown mask. The kind that fits over the top of the head with curly red hair. And I was immediately aware of two things: without even asking that he thought he was the most cleverest boy in the place and if asked would say, “But I AM wearing a mask!”. The second that he was the dumbest person I would lay eyes on for the month and hated him like House Atreides hates House Harkonnen.
I like to think he’s in panel eight.
Stay safe.
I was walking through the park one day….
Another occasion to try something a little different. While things are still a bit……off schedule…..still thinking about the current state of of things, how people arrive and read and what makes the most sense. Looking for a balance of “what works on fifty hundred screen sizes” versus “what allows for a lot of play in layout and such”.
Skoode off to the park with his lovable companion, enjoying these last dog days of summer. As a kid, I saw Day of the Triffids several times on one of those afternoon movie shows wherein kids were left to bask in movies that would worm their way into our subconscious and haunt us for decades. The idea of being blind and stalked by weird plants…..some nightmare fuel there. Later I would read the book which you should absolutely check out.
MURICA SALAD
A culinary choice reflecting these turbulent times.
What have we been slacking off on while sheltering?
I think people fall into two groups……either during the lat few months you have been very very busy, or very very bored. I’ve been on the busy side mostly. No mushrooms on the belly yet.
It’s fair to day this has turned a corner into a “cast of characters and also other things I want to draw” type of comic. Weighed this back and forth and decided these things really have their own life and at certain points it’s best to let them be what they want to be.
This originally started as “practice” in a sense. The idea was to do SOMETHING – to make a comic on a schedule, feel out posting, the process, find the dips and challenges and so on. At the start I told myself there was no attachment to the characters and no long term goals, so I was free to just wing it.
Ten years later and still winging it. A lot learned but also I did end up holding on to these characters for better or worse. No fame, but still that drive to keep making these that only other people with the same obsession would relate to I suppose.
The internet wants you to stay healthy.
The internet has returned, as it is always wont to do.
Folks the internet really only wants whats best for you. Always.
How are our pets getting through quarantine?
Never trust a caged rodent.
Ever.
Activities to keep yourself occupied during the quarantine
It’s another super fun size funny paper haha about the state of things. Yeee!
Things what I seen at the grocery store during the pandemic
Full disclosure: one of these things I did not see, but heard about. Another may be exaggerated but by the Oath of the Cartoonist I swear it is accurate in spirit.
I live in an are that seems to be in the good/bad balance. On one hand it’s not a big city type of place so things are not as dense, which is currently an advantage. However a large part of the population can’t seem to grasp some basic freakin’ concepts so you lose that advantage almost immediately. To give you a sense: last week the cops had to shut down an ice cream stand that decided to open anyway. With about 60 people milling around out front.
So. Yeah.
ANY. Way. We persevere, and observe as is our lot. Still working with the Wacom and it’s getting more natural. I also learned I know a pitiful amount about color so should probably add that to the List of Things to Know Before the Light.
